Canary Wharf skyscraper set for approval

Ballymore is set to receive planning permission for a 51-storey residential skyscraper in Canary Wharf, five years after refusal for a shorter scheme.

Plans for the one-acre site at Cuba Street, E14, would see 421 flats in a single tower previously valued at £270m.

Tower Hamlets’ planning officers have recommended the scheme for approval at the committee on 13 January.

Ballymore revised the plans in 2020, after the council rejected previous proposals in 2017 citing fears of overdevelopment, height, scale and loss of privacy. The previous plans comprised two buildings of up to 41 storeys, with 434 flats.

However, since the refusal a number of taller towers have since been proposed, approved and constructed in the area.

To the north Ballymore and EcoWorld have built two towers of 51 and 55 storeys at Wardian London. Neary at Alpha Square, to the south-east of the site, Far East Consortium’s Consort Place will rise to 65 storeys.
