McCarthy Stone warns of looming retirement home crisis

Demand for later living homes in the UK is four times higher than supply and an emerging housing crisis in this sector must now be tackled, McCarthy Stone has warned.

The UK’s biggest retirement housing developer has urged government to ensure that 10% of new housing is designed for pensioners and a new taskforce “examine barriers to increased supply” for older people and include experts from across the housing and healthcare sectors.

Just 7,000 retirement properties are built every year, but the belief is that the demand is much higher as the population ages and older as well as younger generations are hit by Britain’s housing crisis.
