Cube, the real estate sector’s first competition dedicated to supporting commercial buildings in their quest to make a contribution to net zero, has officially launched in the UK.
Announced in June last year, the competition has already signed up nine real estate firms to pioneer new and innovative approaches to driving energy efficiency in their buildings. They are: Landsec, Stanhope, Savills, TOG, the Howard de Walden Estate, RO, XLB Property, Workspace and Dorrington.
The companies come from a range of sectors and locations with a broad spectrum of building types in which to innovate, comprising existing, heritage and newly refurbished commercial premises.
Cube has been set up to help firms improve energy efficiency through a competition but also to encourage closer collaboration between landlords, building managers and occupiers.
Now that the year-long competition has kicked off, all participants must submit their historic energy data. Cube engineers can then calculate baselines against which ongoing monthly performance and top-ranked performers will be assessed. The first rankings will be revealed in May.
Kristin Marin, chief inspiration officer at Cube in the UK, said: “In some cities, office buildings are losing a huge £60m in wasted energy annually so it is encouraging to see genuine commitment from a growing group of industry leaders joining together to effect long-lasting transformation and drive positive environmental impact.
“Cube is designed to inspire a fun, competitive spirit, demonstrating that small interventions in how we use buildings can add up to substantial changes in energy performance.”
Registration to the competition remains open until the end of April.
