A record number of planning applications for extensions and home improvements were approved last year, with 247,500 consents granted in England alone.
That was 36% above the number signed off in the year before and a fifth above the pre-pandemic “norm”, according to researchers at Savills.
Lucian Cook, head of residential research at Savills, said: “Since the pandemic we have seen a strong correlation between home-mover numbers and home extensions and improvements, as more people are buying and then extending the property to better suit their needs.”
