Greenwich opposes £2bn Silvertown tunnel

Greenwich has become the fourth London council to oppose the planned £2bn Silvertown tunnel.

The move means that both of the boroughs that would be connected by the tunnel under the Thames – Greenwich and Newham – oppose the plans, putting them at loggerheads with London mayor Sadiq Khan.

Silvertown would link the Greenwich peninsula with Royal Docks in Newham, where councillors two weeks ago voted for the tunnel to be cancelled. Lewisham and Hackney councils voted to oppose the tunnel in 2015.

Khan has accused the councils of “wanting to put off tough decisions”.

Khan insists the tunnel, in combination with new bus routes, road charging and emissions control schemes, would reduce congestion. But opponents say the new road would bring increased traffic, especially from lorries, and that any successor to Khan could eliminate the tolls he says would deter drivers.
