The Cobb in Lyme Regis needs £3m to save it from crumbling into the sea.
The Grade I listed medieval harbour pier, made famous by the 1981 film adaptation of The French Lieutenant’s Woman, is showing “significant signs of sea-floor erosion, which is slowly destabilising the structure”.
The council’s cabinet will consider a business case for its repair and restoration, with a decision likely by May. If approved, the work would also give coastal protection to 37 properties and could be finished by next March.
The scheme would be funded by a £2.5m flood defence grant, with local developers adding £475,000.
