Fourth London Olympics would be ‘greenest ever’

London is limbering up for the greenest Olympics ever, with a bid to host the Games in 2036 or 2040.

London mayor Sadiq Khan said future Olympics must be based on sustainable and green credentials, which would give cities such as London an advantage because they could use existing stadiums and facilities. He said the cost would not be “humongous” because the city had a lot of infrastructure from the 2012 Games.

If successful, it would be an unprecedented fourth time the city has hosted the event.

Large parts of the 2012 infrastructure in London are no longer usable, however. The London Stadium, which held most of the athletics events, has been downsized and converted into a football stadium. The aquatics centre has also been slimmed down. The biggest obstacle would be where to locate the athletes’ village. The 2012 version has been transformed into residential blocks. East Village is now home to about 6,000 people.

The logistical challenge of finding accommodation close to the Olympic venues is expected to pose the biggest obstacle to a London bid.
