The Church of England is planning to pump more of its money into rural parishes, after admitting that it “got it wrong” by focusing on urban congregations.
The archbishops of Canterbury and York announced yesterday (11 May) that they would hand over £3.6bn of central funding, but that the focus would no longer be on deprived urban areas.
The £3.6bn pot will contribute towards everything from the upkeep of cathedrals to funding for special projects, such as reducing carbon footprints or tackling racism. It covers around 20% of church costs, with most of the cash coming from donations from churchgoers.
The funding will start with a £1.2bn pot for the next three years, a 30% increase on the last three-year period.
