Whitechapel Life Sciences Cluster hits the market

A developer is sought to transform outdated buildings and empty sites around the Royal London Hospital into a new home for life sciences in London.

Under the plan submitted in December 2021, the 3.5-acre site, known as the Whitechapel Life Sciences Cluster, will comprise 800,000 sq ft of new life sciences spaces that can provide specialised labs, flexible offices, new public realm, cafés and community spaces.

Savills was appointed to market this opportunity by NHS Property Services, which is acting on behalf of the Department of Health and Social Care.

Oliver Fursdon, London commercial development director at Savills, said: “Whitechapel Life Sciences Cluster is strategically located with excellent connectivity to both Old Street and east London’s tech hub, and the city’s financial centres, providing the potential to develop a pioneering scheme that could transform the area and capitalise on growing demand from the life sciences sector in London.”

The site is also adjacent to several health, research and academic institutions, including the Royal London Hospital and Queen Mary University of London. The latter agreed to acquire a plot of the wider site in November 2021, included in the planning application, for the development of a new state-of-the-art life sciences centre.
