Planning laws to be relaxed to build scores of mega-greenhouses

Planning laws will be relaxed to allow the construction of a raft of mega greenhouses in an effort to improve Britain’s food security.

The greenhouses, each the size of 10 football pitches, will be able to grow tomatoes, cucumbers and soft fruit all year round. The UK is currently dependent on imports for much of its supply.

George Eustice, who took the post of environment secretary in February 2020, said the move had been informed by a series of events that had threatened the UK’s supply chain. The proposals will be published by the prime minister later this week.
