The construction industry is likely to be more than a quarter of a million workers short, owing to dramatic changes in the labour market.
Changes caused by the pandemic and Brexit will leave the industry with 266,000 vacancies to fill, said the Construction Industry Training Board, while the workforce will need to grow to 2.78m people by 2026 to meet demand.
A new report from the board says the industry needs to recruit 50,000 people a year – including this year – over the next five years. “That will be a challenge, as there is more competition from other sectors and fewer available people,” Tim Balcon, its chief executive, said.
