Scarborough Group International in partnership with Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust had lodged plans to develop a 36,000 sq ft centre of excellence to improve child health.
The National Centre for Child Health Tech will be located at Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park in Attercliffe and will feature laboratories, workshops and clinical space.
The £26m research and innovation facility, part-funded by £8.9m of levelling up funding, will focus on developing technology to address child health issues.
Paul Dimitri, professor of child health and director of research and innovation at Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, said: “It is set to develop the most advanced therapies in the world through digital and technology development for children and young people. The current pandemic has brought some challenging child health issues back into stark focus – childhood obesity, mental health, access to healthcare for children with complex health needs and collectively the need to ensure that we protect children as they develop.”
Mark Jackson, group director at Scarborough, said: “We are looking forward to commencing construction work on site in the very near future.”
Scarborough is now working on detailed planning applications to develop the next phase of the park, including a 100,000 sq ft innovation centre and a purpose-built 70,000 sq ft grow-on centre.
An outline planning application is also due to be submitted for the wider masterplan, which will include a further 900,000 sq ft of commercial space, alongside public realm improvements and transport infrastructure.
