Pound slumps as stocks slide

The pound has fallen to a two-year low against the dollar over fears that higher energy prices will push the UK economy into recession.

Yesterday Sterling fell to as low as $1.193 against the dollar.

The dollar was the only beneficiary of a rout on the global stock markets, as investors pulled away from any stock at risk from recession.
