XPO Logistics has submitted a planning application for a circa £40m logistics hub in Newarthill, Scotland.
The logistics provider, which owns the site, is seeking to deliver a 300,000 sq ft warehouse for storage and distribution as well as associated offices. It is estimated to create up to 473 jobs.
The site, which measures 40 acres, is bounded by Edinburgh Road and Legbrannock Road, in Motherwell. It adjoins the company’s existing transport hub.
XPO said it identified a “significant requirement” for large-scale bespoke warehouses on the M8 corridor, highlighting an “acute shortage” of warehouse space measuring more than 100,000 sq ft in this locality.
Under the proposals, the provider will aim to achieve net zero carbon for operational energy at the site. This would be achieved through creative building design measures and the introduction of low and zero-carbon technologies such as roof-mounted solar panels.
If plans are approved, around a third of the development site will be occupied by the warehousing facilities and associated built infrastructure, with the remaining portion reserved for biodiversity enhancement measures and improved public access.
