Whyte & Mackay is backing plans for a freeport in the Highlands.
The company, which is one of Scotland’s largest whisky producers, would be in a position to take advantage of cheap green hydrogen if the Inverness and Cromarty Firth bid is successful.
The governments at Holyrood and Westminster will select two green freeports in Scotland from five bidders. Along with the Highlands bid, there is one from Orkney, a north-east submission covering Aberdeen and Peterhead, a Firth of Forth proposal and one for areas along the River Clyde.
The winners will benefit from tax and tariff breaks and relaxed planning rules.
