Minister’s property firm recommends food banks to tenants after rent rise

A property firm owned by the family of a Conservative minister has suggested tenants should turn to local food banks after it raised their rent by almost £1,000 a year.

The i claims to have seen an email sent by the Benyon Estate to tenants in Hackney, London, that said “although the estate is very sympathetic to the increased cost of living, they will be unable to accommodate your request for a rent reduction at this time”, and adding that it could send “a number of links to various services such as food banks etc… should they be of interest”.

The Benyon Estate is the London arm of the Englefield Estate in Berkshire, owned by Conservative minister Lord Benyon’s family.
