The former Beatties department store on Birmingham’s Corporation Street is being converted into an urban storage hub.
Self-storage start-up StoreAway has taken over the 60,500 sq ft vacant department store and is installing 650 lockers in the space.
The acquisition is part of StoreAway’s plans to repurpose more than a 250,000 sq ft of unoccupied retail and leisure space across the country into storage.
Richard Lanyon, managing director of StoreAway, said: “Our long-term vision for the future is clear and while the concept is still in its infancy, we have captured the attention of owners such as Legal & General.
“The new store sits in a prime location in UK’s second largest city and is in the perfect place for our facility to thrive due to it being right on the doorstep of our many different types of customers that we know this service will be of benefit to.”
StoreAway’s flagship site opened in Liverpool in May. It has a third operational location in Cheltenham and has secured sites in Bath, Basildon and Swindon.
