Helmsley acquires York’s Cumberland House

Helmsley Group has purchased the Grade I listed Cumberland House, located in central York.

The transaction forms a part of the continued regeneration of Coney Street, with plans to reshape the riverside into 250,000 sq ft of mixed-use retail, leisure, commercial, and residential space.

The Georgian building spans 7,500 sq ft and overlooks the River Ouse. It was purchased from law firm Hague & Dixon, which also occupied the building. The workspace is currently vacant, with a search for new occupiers already under way.

Max Reeves, development director at Helmsley, said: “Cumberland House forms part of our programme of strategic acquisitions across this area of the city. As outlined in our vision for Coney Street Riverside, we’re committed to striking the delicate balance between transformation and heritage protection when it comes to development within York, as a means of further enhancing the city’s unique and historic character.”
