Halloween statement could be delayed as Sunak gets ‘under the bonnet’

Next week’s planned fiscal statement could be delayed until next month.

The Halloween statement was promised by Kwasi Kwarteng after his mini-Budget caused market turmoil. It was subsequently confirmed by his successor Jeremy Hunt, who has been kept in place as chancellor by the new prime minister Rishi Sunak.

But Sunak, a former chancellor, is understood to want to get “under the bonnet” of the plans, with one option being to have a full Budget in late November instead.

The market’s response to Sunak becoming prime minister and promising a return to sound money has made the need for an immediate statement less pressing.
