Horizon’s Irish manufacturing site expansion gets planning permission

Biotechnology company Horizon has secured conditional planning permission to add drug development and manufacturing facilities to is existing hub in Waterford, Ireland.

The proposed development would expand Horizon’s existing 44,000 sq ft manufacturing site, adding about 320,000 sq ft, and would create 350 jobs over time. The firm purchased its existing facility in June 2021 for $65m (£56m).

The move comes as the firm continues to work with Ireland’s Health Products Regulatory Authority and the US Food and Drug Administration to obtain licensure for sterile fill-finish manufacturing. The first medicine is expected to be approved for release from the existing facility in 2023.

Horizon chairman, president and chief executive Tim Walbert said: “The planned expansion to add this drug substance facility is important to the long-term growth of our commercial and pipeline biologics, as well as our commitment to Ireland.”
