Manchester’s first eco aparthotel secures £3.5m financing

Northside has partnered with hospitality company Room2 to develop Manchester’s first “zero carbon” aparthotel complex.

The newly-formed joint venture has secured £3.5m financing from commercial lender Together for acquisition of the site in Manchester Piccadilly. As well as the proposed tower, the site also features a Grade II listed former Union Bank building.

The partners will now start drafting the plans for the 185-bedroom “whole life, net zero carbon hometel”, with a planning application expected to be submitted in the next few months.

The move follows the opening of Room2’s first net zero “hometel” in Chiswick, W4, which it claims to be 89% more energy efficient than a typical UK hotel. Each room has its own kitchenette, while the wider development features solar panels, recycled furniture, zero food waste and a green roof with 75,000 bees and wildflowers.

Michael Devanny, corporate relationship director at Together, said: “[The funding] will allow Room2 to press ahead with planning the city’s – and region’s – only whole life net zero hotel.”

Ice Cubed Property Finance advised Northside on the deal.
