Plans approved for former Tonbridge gas works redev

Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council has green-lit plans to regenerate a redundant gas works site overlooking the River Medway to create a new residential scheme.

The Harris Partnership and Blueberry Homes have been in discussion with the council since 2019 to develop 144 one, two and three-bedroom homes across two buildings on a two-acre brownfield site which was once home to Tonbridge Gas Company.

The partners plan to create an ancillary space on the ground floor of the buildings, designated for retail, hospitality or office space. The proposals also include the delivery of landscaping and public realm and the creation of two roof gardens.

Remediation of the project is expected to start in 2023, with the site to be fully developed by 2025.

Ian Perrell, director of the Harris Partnership, who is leading the project, said: “The existing site is heavily contaminated and in a poor condition. These plans present a once-in-a-generation opportunity to not just transform the area but provide a catalyst for sustainable further development on the Medway and to unlock the riverfront.”
