Black Friday pushed up the value of retail sales by 4.2% in November, but inflation masked a large drop in volumes.
According to the monthly sales monitor by the British Retail Consortium and KPMG, the rise in the value of sales was driven by an increase in spending on food, which rose by 5.5% in like-for-like terms over the 12 months. Non-food sales fell by 0.4%.
Much of the non-food spending appears to have been on warm clothing.
