Court set to rule on Dartmoor wild camping case

The High Court is set to rule this week on whether a wealthy landowner can ban wild campers from Dartmoor in Devon.

Alexander Darwall, a hedge fund manager and Dartmoor’s sixth-largest landowner, has brought a legal challenge against the national park.

Darwall, who owns the 4,000-acre Blachford Estate on southern Dartmoor, is seeking to remove the public’s right to responsibly camp on sections of the moor, which has been permitted since 1985.

Outside the court, protesters shouted: “Dartmoor is for everyone,” danced to music from a samba band and listened to a performance by the folk musician Sam Lee.
