Footfall slumps in run up to Christmas

Footfall on British high streets fell by 27% in the week before Christmas as shoppers opted to stay at home.

The number of shoppers was also down by 19% on the same week in 2019, according to data from Springboard.

It was only 7.2% higher than the same week in 2021, when shoppers stayed away from high streets due to the spread of the Omicron variant of Covid.

However, there was a welcome surge on Boxing Day, with 2022 footfall 38.8% higher than in 2021.
