BioMed backs bio-incubator scheme

BioMed Realty has signed up to become a strategic partner to Babraham Research Campus’s Accelerate@Babraham bio-incubator programme.

The concept was created to bring together a network of experts, mentors and investors to equip early career science entrepreneurs with the skills, connections and access to communal laboratories to begin, test and build their business propositions.

As part of the deal, BioMed will provide a financial contribution to cover some operational and lab costs for Accelerate@Babraham, which is set to re-launch at the end of this month. To date, companies which have participated in the programme have raised £46.1m and the current portfolio value is more than £90m.

The move follows the appointment of Kathryn Chapman late last year, who was charged with identifying and delivering the support for the programme, and a collaboration between BioMed and Babraham for the development of a £26m lab and office facility on the campus.

BioMed joins a group of existing strategic partners which work alongside supporters: One Nucleus; Taylor Vinters; RxCelerate; Silicon Valley Bank; and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council.

Orestis Tzortzoglou, vice president of development and UK market at BioMed, said: “Our goal is to help grow the Cambridge market, the life sciences industry and related employment opportunities in the UK through the provision of sustainable buildings and the cultivation of new talent and ideas – our involvement with Accelerate@Babraham will allow us to do exactly that.”
