The government has given final approval to two new freeports in Liverpool and East Anglia.
Freeport East, which covers Felixstowe and Harwich, and Liverpool city region join those that have already been approved in Plymouth, Solent, the Thames, the Humber, Teesside and around East Midlands Airport.
The two new freeports will now receive up to £25m seed funding each from the government over the next few years, in addition to being able to retain business rates to upgrade infrastructure and stimulate regeneration.
More freeports are yet to come, with £52m being invested to bring two “green freeports” to Scotland, as well as at least one freeport in Wales. Discussions are ongoing to extend the programme to Northern Ireland.
Levelling up minister Dehenna Davison said: “Freeports are magnets for investments, putting places like the Wirral and Harwich on the global stage and the frontier of innovation.”
