Plans for a £430m sustainable extension for the historic Sussex town of Lewes have been submitted by Human Nature.
The timber-built, 700-home development will transform the former Phoenix industrial estate and aims to be an exemplar of sustainability and a benchmark for future developments.
The car-free scheme, which fronts on to the River Ouse and requires considerable flood-risk management, will also include 35,000 sq ft of commercial space, six public squares, three public gardens and four buildings for community use, carved out of the former ironworks.
The project, largely funded by local families, has been masterplanned by Periscope but combines the work of 11 architectural practices.
Human Nature founder, Jonathan Smales, a former managing director of Greenpeace, said: “We want this to be the most exciting, vibrant community and the most sustainable too. There is no time for half-measures anymore.”
