Wiltshire development could destroy Roman villa

An undiscovered Roman villa faces destruction if council officials grant a developer permission to build 180 homes without first calling in archaeologists, heritage experts have warned.

Martin Valatin believes he has found evidence of a large Roman villa complex hidden underneath a medieval water meadow earmarked for development on the edge of Trowbridge in Wiltshire.

For the past two years Waddeton Park, the developer seeking planning permission for the housing estate, has failed to heed advice from council archaeologists and Historic England to dig trenches to see if archaeological treasures lie under their proposed site.
