Bristol Zoo does not need to sell city site, campaigners claim

Bristol Zoo did not have to sell its city centre site for housing, campaigners have claimed.

The world’s oldest provincial zoo has been accused of misleading the public after closing its 186-year-old site in the Clifton area of the city. It said rising costs meant that its only option was to seek planning permission for 192 homes on the 12-acre site, sell the site for £40m and move its operations to the Wild Place animal park in south Gloucestershire.

However, the Save Bristol Zoo Gardens group has said that selling the site was just one of a number of options drawn up for the zoo after a strategy review by KPMG.
