Disney stripped of planning and tax powers in Florida

Disney has been stripped of its self-governing powers over its Florida estate after the state’s governor signed a law revoking its privileges.

In a ceremony near the gates of the Disney World theme park in Orlando, the Republican governor Ron DeSantis signed legislation that places the company’s special tax district under state control after more than half a century.

“Today, the corporate kingdom finally comes to an end,” said DeSantis at the signing ceremony. “There’s a new sheriff in town and accountability will be the order of the day.”

Disney had enjoyed near autonomy art its Reedy Creek site, allowing it to grant its own planning permissions and set its own taxes.

DeSantis was responding to Disney’s decision to publicly oppose Florida’s Parental Rights in Education law, known by critics as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill.
