Paris has plans to ‘re-enchant’ Champs Élysées

Plans to “re-enchant” the Champs Élysées have taken a step forward, as concerns are raised over who will pay for it.

Architect Philippe Chiambaretta was commissioned by the local business association to draw up plans to reduce traffic, widen pavements, plant trees, make the boulevard less dangerous to cyclists and pedestrians and the gardens more attractive.

The plans also include 20 new restaurants and 2,580 sq m of sports equipment.

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo has given the plan her blessing, with president Emmanuel Macron also supportive.

Chiambaretta said almost everyone he had consulted had approved of his plan but added: “The question is: who will pay for it?”
