Lake District councillors have voted to double council tax bills for second-home owners.
Westmorland and Furness Council is the latest authority to hike the bills in an attempt to prevent local people from being priced out of the areas they grew up in.
The vote to increase the tax on second homes by 100% was passed at the council’s first official meeting. It will be added to council tax bills from April next year if parliament passes levelling-up legislation to give local authorities more powers.
Last November, councillors in North Yorkshire voted to charge double rates on second homes. The county, which includes popular destinations such as Scarborough and Whitby, has the highest concentration of second homes in England.
Norfolk, Cornwall and Wales have also voted for similar changes.
