Vertical farming operator Harvest London has signed for 139,977 sq ft at Prologis Park in Beddington, near Croydon, south London, for a new indoor farm growing produce for businesses in the food service and retail sectors.
Harvest London will operate a “technologically advanced” indoor farm at the site, where it will grow herbs and food for salads.
The facility will be net zero in operation. All crops grown on the premises will be as sustainable as possible and will use fewer resources than those grown in traditional fields.
Prologis said the operator’s controlled environment agriculture method reduces water consumption compared with traditional farming, uses no chemical pesticides, avoids agricultural pollution of rivers and shortens supply chains.
Chris Davies, chief executive and founder of Harvest London, said it had a “shared goal” with Prologis of “driving sustainability across our operations”.
He added: “Prologis Park Beddington was the ideal place for our expansion, enabling us to serve customers in London and beyond, helping to maximise the benefits of vertical farming.
“We want to bring production much closer to the end consumer, meaning fresher and more nutritious food, and connecting people in cities much more closely with farming.”
Gillian Scarth, director of capital deployment for Prologis UK, said: “Prologis has always been at the forefront of innovation, and we are excited to support the ongoing sustainable farming methods introduced by Harvest London as they continue to grow.”
