Riverside Studios up for sale

Savills has been appointed by administrators at Grant Thornton to sell London’s Riverside Studios, W6, after it fell into administration last month.

The studios, which was used by the BBC to film Doctor Who in the 1960s and 1970s, failed following rising energy bills and a crippling debt incurred by its recent redevelopment.

The Hammersmith venue closed in 2014 for redevelopment and opened again in November 2019.

Paul Breen, director in Savills’ leisure team, said: “The Riverside Studios presents a unique opportunity to acquire a long leasehold property in a highly desirable riverside location in west London.

“It is a state-of-the-art purpose-built facility with a uniquely central proposition in the arts and culture sector. With the scarcity of this type of opportunity and the incredibly high barriers of entry, we expect there will be significant and diverse demand in the market place from both potential occupiers and investors.”

The 95,000 sq ft site currently operates as an arts centre with a restaurant, two studios, two cinema screens, events space and production rooms. The long lease on the building expires in 2214.
