Bruntwood SciTech has teamed up with Aston University to develop a new innovation cluster in Birmingham.
The 20-hectare scheme, named Birmingham Innovation Quarter and unveiled at UKREiiF today, is supported by Birmingham City Council, and will form part of the city’s Knowledge Quarter.
The proposals will transform a site around Aston University, including existing property assets and sites owned by both the university and Birmingham City Council, such as the former Aston Science Park and Bruntwood SciTech’s Innovation Birmingham campus.
The masterplan outlines a long-term mix of strategic development, covering commercial office space for the science and tech sector, private and student housing, hospitality and new teaching and research facilities.
Formal joint venture vehicles will be established between the three parties in due course.
Arcadis and Howells have been commissioned to work on the spatial framework for the masterplan.
The move will fulfil part of a pledge made by Chris Oglesby, Bruntwood SciTech’s executive chair and Bruntwood chief executive, at last year’s Commonwealth Games to invest £1bn in the West Midlands over the next decade.
Bruntwood SciTech is a jv between Legal & General and Bruntwood. Its commitment to the West Midlands mirrors that of L&G, which signed a seven-year, £4bn partnership with the West Midlands Combined Authority at last year’s UKREiiF.
