Infrastructure levy slammed by coalition of councils and developers

More than two dozen organisations, ranging from councils to charities to developers, have urged ministers to drop plans for a new infrastructure levy.

The plans, included in the Levelling-up Bill, seek to make developers provide more affordable homes and local amenities, including GP surgeries, but critics say they will simply result in fewer homes being built.

A coalition organised by the County Councils Network, including the Town and Country Planning Association and the Home Builders Federation, has written to levelling up secretary Michael Gove and prime minister Rishi Sunak to urge them to drop the plans.

“We cannot support reforms that are likely to leave communities with fewer new social and affordable homes, mixed and balanced developments and less of the infrastructure they need,” they wrote.
