Vision for £1.7bn ID Manchester unveiled

Manchester City Council will next week vote on proposals for the redevelopment of some 4m sq ft around Manchester University’s North Campus as part of the strategic regeneration framework for the site.

The framework has been put forward by Bruntwood SciTech and the university for the ID Manchester project. Bruntwood SciTech was selected as the university’s development partner on the £1.7bn scheme in 2022. The framework replaces one endorsed in 2017.

The completed ID Manchester project will provide some 2m sq ft of commercial and retail space and 1,500 homes. Key heritage assets on the 26-acre site, including the Sackville Street (pictured) and Renold buildings will be rejuvenated, with urban biodiversity across the scheme increased by at least 10%.

Once complete, the ID Manchester project is expected to contribute around £900m to the local economy annually.

The vision for the project described in the framework is that ID Manchester will “be recognised internationally as one of the world’s leading applied innovation districts”.

Lou Cordwell, director of ID Manchester, said: “Over the next 15 years, we have the opportunity to design a whole new district of the city that will establish Manchester as a global leader for applied innovation and drive skills, ideas and economic growth in both Manchester and the UK.

“ID Manchester marks a step change in the UK’s ambition to be a world leader in science and tech, not only supporting the UK’s innovation strategy, but also creating the exemplar for inclusive innovation – our values of sustainable growth, inclusivity and positive social impact will be at the heart of ID Manchester.”

Following an endorsement by the council next week, a public consultation on the plans will be launched.
