SNP gets stricter on energy efficiency

Scottish residential landlords may be forced to install low-carbon heat pumps if they want to sell their properties.

The new rules are being considered by the SNP as part of an overhaul of its energy performance certificate ratings systems.

From 2025, properties will need to have an EPC rating of C if an owner wants to sell or lease the building. However, the SNP wants to overhaul the system and give it more stringent green standards, meaning some homes that currently achieve a C rating will be downgraded.

This could include giving a lower score to homes heated by gas boilers, forcing some owners to install a heat pump before they can sell.
