ENO delays relocation plans

English National Opera has been granted another reprieve and will be allowed to keep its headquarters in London for a further three years before it must relocate.

Arts Council England has granted the company a further £24m, despite previously saying it would be cut off from future grants unless it relocated out of London from its base at the Coliseum on St Martin’s Lane, WC1.

In a joint press release with ACE, the opera house said that it planned to confirm the location of its new home in December this year. Liverpool, Manchester, Bristol, Birmingham and Nottingham are all understood to be in the running.

However, insiders at ENO have cast doubt on whether the plan will even go ahead.
