Manchester City gets approval for £300m Etihad expansion

Manchester City has received planning approval from Manchester City Council for the £300m development and expansion of Etihad Stadium.

The club’s approved plans, which were submitted in April 2023, include an expanded north stand with one larger, single upper tier above the existing lower tier, increasing capacity to more than 60,000.

The upper tier will include a sky bar with views overlooking the pitch as well as a stadium roof walk experience.

The plans also include the development of a fan zone with capacity for 3,000 people, food and drink outlets, a new club shop, museum, and a 400-bed hotel.

It is expected that main construction works will commence on-site in November 2023, with the north stand itself being completed and open during the 2025/26 football season.

The club has also proposed including workspace to be used by start-up and medium-sized organisations looking to co-locate and collaborate with the club, City Football Group and Etihad campus partners, which will subsequently complete construction by late 2026.

Danny Wilson, managing director, Manchester City operations, said: “This development will not only enable the club to enhance and expand its offering to fans and visitors on both matchday and non-matchday, but it will also create lasting long-term economic and social benefits for our local community, building on the regeneration work City Football Group has delivered in East Manchester since 2008.”
