Plans to redevelop Telephone House approved

Brockton Everlast’s proposals to redevelop Telephone House in Shoreditch, EC2, have been approved by the London Borough of Hackney.

The planning sub-committee met on Tuesday 25 July and approved the firm’s proposals to demolish the existing 1960s building and replace it with an office block of up to 10-storeys.

When complete the site will offer 299,161 sq ft of office space, 10,882 sq ft of retail space and 5,704 sq ft of events space near Old Street station.

As part of the redevelopment the new building, which is designed by Piercy&Company, will be sustainability-focused and provide more urban greening, roof-terraces, and co-working space.

A total of 27 objections to the proposed development were received during consultation stages, which led to the application being referred to a committee. Documents submitted to the council said objections which included “unacceptable impact of a building of this scale and bulk on the heritage setting”, a design that “does not relate well to neighbouring buildings”, and impact on neighbouring amenity specifically sunlight.
