City of London launches ‘cop shop’ plans with resi conversion

The City of London Corporation wants to create a new base for the local police force, converting retail space in a 1960s block.

Plans have been lodged for a redevelopment of part of Middlesex Street Estate, E1, a scheme dominated by the 23-storey Petticoat Tower and Petticoat Square, with almost 150 properties surrounding a landscaped podium area.

The corporation wants a change-of-use approval for part of the basement, ground and first floor of six retail units into a “new operational base” for the City of London Police, including offices, storage, parking and welfare facilities.

A planning statement prepared by Rapleys said the development would complement “ongoing changes” to the existing police estate, including a new HQ in Salisbury Square and the eventual closure of Bishopsgate Police Station.
