London luvvies unite against ‘Malibu-mansion’

Some of the English acting establishment’s finest have united to object to a Malibu-style mansion in the Arts and Craft heart of West Hampstead.

Dame Emma Thompson, Jim Broadbent, Imelda Staunton and Jim Carter have all objected the the plans to demolish a 1960s block next to Hampstead Cricket Club and replace it with an aluminium-clad, four-bedroom home. The plans have been lodged by Daniel and Sendi Young, a couple working in AI and cryptocurrency.

Thompson’s husband, Greg Wise, a trained architect, penned the objection.

“I have no inherent issues with modern design, but, like planting trees: the right design in the right place. This is the wrong design in the wrong place,” he wrote. “It would fit in perfectly in Malibu, but not in our conservation area.”

Savills, the agent for the application, said it had already tweaked the designs.
