Dangerously crumbling concrete is present in more hospitals than had been thought and it will cost billions to fix the problem, MPs have been told.
At a hearing of the public accounts committee, health bosses said that reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete was just one problem of ageing NHS buildings.
The NHS has identified RAAC at 41 sites in England, including at seven hospitals where it was used throughout, requiring a full rebuild.
Hospitals are having to shut units, moving patients out and closing theatres “day in day out” because of health and safety issues caused by a £10bn maintenance backlog.
