Ministers are looking to order nearly 1,000 prefabricated buildings to act as school classrooms.
The Department for Education has issued two contract notices, worth tens of millions, for ready-made teaching blocks to replace those classrooms that have been put out of action by crumbling concrete, or RAAC.
The contracts anticipate that the temporary buildings, which can each accommodate a class of 30 children, could be needed up until 2027, underlining the scale of the challenge facing the government as it attempts to rectify the defects in the school estate.
