Entertainment giant AEG Europe is to submit plans for an 8,500-seat arena at Parabola’s Edinburgh Park regeneration scheme.
If approved by Edinburgh City Council, the venue will be the first of its kind for the city. The site at Parabola’s new urban quarter had previously been earmarked for housing. The company said it had agreed to sell the site for the new venue to AEG.
Parabola’s masterplan for Edinburgh Park, in the west of the city, is for 1m sq ft of commercial space, a civic square, sports, medical and recreational facilities, and up to 1,800 homes. The company completed its first commercial building, 1 New Park Square, offering conference, café and restaurant space, last year.
AEG, which owns the long lease on the O2 in London, said the Edinburgh site offered “the perfect location to become home to live music and entertainment in Scotland, with unrivalled public transport options and motorway access available nearby”. The site has access to mainline railway stations and tram and bus stops, as well as good motorway links.
“We can’t wait to become an integral part of the local community and complement one of the best cities in the world as a destination for culture and global tourism,” AEG added.
Previous plans to bring a stadium to a site in Straiton, south of Edinburgh, were put forward by Lothian Leisure Development and Birmingham venue owner NEC in 2019 but did not progress.
