Harwell’s Rutherford Appleton lab expansion gets go-ahead

The Science and Technology Facilities Council has secured approval to deliver additional space at building R1, which forms a part of Rutherford Appleton Laboratory at the Harwell Science Campus, Oxfordshire.

The plans, created by Fairhursts Design Group, include partial demolition of the existing southwest corner of the building and the construction of a three-storey extension.

The new 21,366 sq ft facility will house Vulcan 20-20, an experimental laser facility capable of generating ultra-high energy pulses for material science experiments.

The existing Vulcan laser facilities, opened in 1957, have undergone several modifications – in the 1980s and, most recently, in 2000.

Harwell Campus houses more than £1bn of science infrastructure. In 2020, Brookfield Asset Management acquired a 50% share in the campus, which was later transferred to its spin-off platform Advanced Research Clusters

Mace has been appointed as the main contractor to deliver the scheme. Carter Jonas advised on planning.
