ARC Oxford gets nod for Ascent lab scheme

Planners have given ARC Oxford the nod to develop a new facility for the science, technology and innovation sector.

The scheme, which will offer 105,000 sq ft of lab-ready space, will be known as Ascent. It will involve demolishing seven buildings at the Oxford campus and construction of a new building featuring a rooftop lounge, wellness spaces and gym facilities.

Works on site are expected to start later this year. Ascent is targeting a BREEAM Excellent rating and Fitwel certification.

Once operational, the scheme will support 500 jobs and contribute an estimated £38m GVA to the economy annually.

Ascent, designed by Spratley & Partners, sits at the heart of the Oxford’s innovation cluster, surrounded by 30 pioneering organisations, including OMass Therapeutics and Ivy Farm.

Dan Williams, director of asset management at ARC Oxford, said: “This latest development at ARC Oxford further supports our mission in attracting world-class talent, driving economic growth and fostering continuous support for the innovation ecosystem in the city.”

Sam George, director at Spratley & Partners, added: “Ascent is an opportunity for us to contribute to ARC’s vision for the campus and to address the demand for life science facilities in Oxford. Our design aims to meet current needs and contribute positively to the future of the local economy and community.”
