Dominus has secured planning permission for a 237-bedroom hotel within a 20th century former office building.
Located at 5-10 Great Tower Street, EC3, the building became obsolete as an office as tenant expectations and requirements changed.
Dominus has worked with Studio Moren to shape proposals that retain all of the building’s substructure and 70% of its superstructure and facade.
In addition to the reuse of the building, Dominus aims to obtain a BREEAM Excellent rating through upgrades to the building’s envelope, efficient plant systems and on-site renewable energy generation from solar panels.
Anupriya Rajpal, development director at Dominus, said: “Dominus operates three hotels in central London and this project will be of a similarly high standard. Having identified the opportunity to repurpose and retrofit this building, the Dominus team are working hard to give this largely vacant building a new lease of life.
Our collaboration with the City of London planning team to bring these proposals forward will create a new attraction within the city, boosting activity in the immediate surroundings. Former office buildings that are now redundant have huge potential for new uses, especially in prime locations. This strategy, which we have refined over the past few years, also works well with the City’s developing leisure infrastructure.”
Shravan Joshi, chairman of the City of London Corporation planning and transportation committee, said: “The City is an iconic location and attracts visitors and tourists from all around the world. We are therefore keen to support developments that will provide high-quality hotel accommodation, especially when those schemes reuse existing buildings, such as the proposals for 5-10 Great Tower Street.
“We will continue to invest in measures to boost the Square Mile’s leisure offer and create a place that stands out nationally and internationally.”
